A fine Chinese inside-painted agate snuff bottle, 20th century, signed Wang Xisan (b. 1938) 二十世紀 王習三作瑪瑙內畫題字鼻煙壺

Inside-painted to one side to depict a lone fisherman waiting patiently for his catch on the snowy banks of a winding river, the reverse with two figures on a small boat, each side with an inscription and red seal marks of Wang Xisan, topped with a lapis lazuli stopper Size:(8.4cm high) Qty: (2) Provenance:From a deceased estate, UK 來源： 英國已故人士遺產 Notes: See a related agate snuff bottle, dated to the guimao year (1963), sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 13 June 2019, lot 8117. Wang Xisan (1938-) learned inside painting from Ye Bengqi and Ye Xiaofeng, following the style of Ye Zhongsan. In 1967, he established his own school, the Ji school. The author notes 'As an artistic genius, Wang rapidly became one of the finest of all enamellers, both artistically and technically, that China has ever produced.' Wang would often utilise the natural inclusions and flaws of the stone as part of his compositions. On the present lot the boating scene is shrouded in a haze of russet simulating mist that would hover over a river on a cool morning, and the reverse makes use of a serrated russet line to create a panel that encloses the inscription and seal mark opposite the scene depicting a lone fisherman. See an agate bottle with a 'shadow' inclusion that is co-opted as part of the painted design, part of the Mary and George Bloch collection, offered at Bonhams Hong Kong, 28 May 2010, lot 108. Another bottle offered at Bonhams New York notes that the 'translucency of the material [imbues] the scene with a ethereal feel...', 19 March 2018, lot 8009.
