ROBIN DAY O.B.E. (BRITISH, 1915-2010) 'FORM GROUP' SOFA, DESIGNED 1960 enamelled steel frame with three mahogany seat frames, Pirelli webbing, and upholstered cushions 76cm high, 220cm wide, 70cm deep (30in high, 86 5/8in wide, 27 ½in deep) Literature:Jackson, Lesley, Robin & Lucienne Day: Pioneers of Contemporary Design, Hachette, London, 2011, p.65 illustrating examples of the Form Group range. Designed by Robin Day for Hille, the ‘Form Group’ range was conceived as a modern alternative to the traditional three-piece suite and marked his first modular seating system, highlighting his innovative approach to furniture design. It received a Design Centre Award in 1961. The system allowed seating elements to be arranged alongside tables and drinks cabinets, with cushions supported by rubber webbing instead of conventional springs.
