CAMEROON BEADED STOOL IN THE FORM OF A LEOPARD, BALI CHIEFDOM

Ca. 19th century AD. >A ceremonial beaded stool in the form of a leopard, the animal crouched beneath a circular seat and supporting it with four bent legs. The sculpture is entirely covered with dense glass beadwork arranged in geometric patterns of blue, white, and black, with the leopard?s eyes rendered in vivid red beads. The circular seat and base are decorated with repeating triangular bead motifs, while the body of the leopard displays net-like and linear patterns that emphasise the contours of the animal?s form. The stylized head, with upright ears and a patterned snout, projects beneath the seat, creating a striking focal point.Among the Bali peoples of Cameroon, beaded stools and thrones were associated with royal authority and chiefly regalia.
