Late Qing Dynasty / Republican, each finely modeled Buddhist guardian lion is depicted in a vibrant 'Famille Jaune et Verte' palette. The male lion (left) rests a paw upon a reticulated ball, symbolizing cosmic energy or the world, while the female (right) carries a playful cub, representing fertility and nurturing. Both have impressed CHINA marks to the undersides of their tails. Minor wear consistent with age and use, as well as firing imperfections typical of the period, a very small chip to the male lion's green-glazed mane and the upper lip of the female lion with slight glaze loss along the underside of the red-glazed rim, both barely noticeable.
