Sir Rabindranath Tanjore was a Bengali poet, writer, musician, and painter who is credited with reshaping Bengali literature and music, becoming the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali. Through the translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West and his fame attained a luminous height, taking him across continents on lecture tours and tours of friendship. He became the voice of India's spiritual heritage worldwide; and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.
