A GROUP OF SEVEN CARVED STONE CORBELS AND BOSSES BY TRADITION FROM BRUTON ABBEY, 13TH/14TH CENTURY Male apostolic head, 28.5cm high Female head possibly Abbess, 15cm high Bearded male apostolic head, 21cm high Female angelic head, 23.5cm high Female crowned head, 24cm high Two deep carved boss style floral fragments, 13cm high Provenance: By tradition from Bruton Abbey, Somerset. Acquired by Henry Hobhouse (1776-1854) and by descent in the Hobhouse family at Hadspen House, Somerset. Bruton Abbey in Bruton, Somerset was founded as a house of Augustinian canons in about 1127, and became an abbey in 1511, shortly before its dissolution in 1539.
