ADOLF HIREMY-HIRSCHEL (HUNGARIAN 1860 - 1933)FOUR COMPOSITIONAL STUDIES AND A DRAPERY STUDY, ONE WITH SUBSIDIARY STUDY (ON THE REVERSE) Black, white and coloured chalk, three on grey paper, one on buff paper 29 x 46.5cm (11¼ x 18¼in.)Hiremy-Hirschel was born in Hungary, but worked in Vienna and then in Rome. A Symbolist artist, he also worked as a portrait painter. The present drawings relate to his painting Ahasuerus (The Wandering Jew), 1888, which is considered to be the artist's masterpiece. Viewed as an allegorical piece Ahasuerus was condemned to wander in perpetuity until the end of the world.
