Scholarly first edition of The Early Diplomatic Relations Between the United States and Japan, 1853–1865 by Payson Jackson Treat, Ph.D., Professor of Far Eastern History at Stanford University. Published in Baltimore by The Johns Hopkins Press, 1917, as part of The Albert Shaw Lectures on Diplomatic History. A comprehensive academic study examining the opening of Japan to the West, Commodore Perry’s expedition, treaty negotiations, and the formative years of U.S.–Japanese diplomatic engagement.
