Published in Baltimore by The Johns Hopkins Press, 1917, as part of The Albert Shaw Lectures on Diplomatic History. A comprehensive academic study examining the opening of Japan to the West, Commodore Perry’s expedition, treaty negotiations, and the formative years of U.S.–Japanese diplomatic engagement.
