A SET OF SIX GOTHIC REVIVAL OAK CHAIRSCIRCA 1860, IN THE MANNER OF A.W.N. PUGIN, E.W. PUGIN AND C.W. PUGINWith Castle Cary horsehair fabric seats, on X-frame legs95cm high, 49cm wide and deepThe 'Gothic' chair pattern of these chair frames evolved from A.W.N. Pugin's 1840s New Palace of Westminster chairs for Prince Albert's Chamber; while their tablet-railed backs relate to designs by his eldest son Edward Welby Pugin (d. 1875) popularised by C.& R. Light's, 'Cabinet Furniture', 1881. A.W.N. Pugin's second son Cuthbert Welby Pugin (d.1928) became manager of the South East Furniture Company, founded by his elder brother Edward and he began assisting Edward in the 1860s. When Edward died in 1875 Cuthbert ran the furniture making and furnishing workshops of the architectural practice of the company 'Pugin & Pugin'.Provenance:St Joseph College, Upholland, Lancashire, which closed in 1987.Twelve chairs of this model were sold, WEST-EAST: The Niall Hobhouse Collection, Christie's London, 22 May 2008, lot 227. 品相： All chairs are structurally sound. There are inevitable scratches, marks, wear and discolouration to the frames. The extremities have some scuffs and rubbing, One back stretcher has been slightly nibbled by a dog. The horsehair seats have marking and some discolouration.
