A BRASS MOUNTED MAHOGANY TELESCOPIC 'PALAIS DE ROYAL' DISPLAY TABLE (PETITE TABLE A CREMAILLERE) BY MAISON A L'ESCALIER DE CRISTAL, PARIS, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF CANABASWith a breche d'alep marble top, on an adjustable column and splayed legs, the underside stamped twice ' ...ALIER DE CRI.../PARIS' and 'ESCALIER DE CR.../ P...'76cm high (unextended), 28cm wide, 38cm deepProvenance:By descent in the Hobhouse family at Hadspen House, Somerset.Literature:Photographed at Hadspen House, The World of Interiors magazine, November 2002. The acclaimed Parisian firm of Maison a l'Escalier de Cristal was established in 1802 by Mme Desarnaud. The business with a shop and workshop was based in the Palais Royal, a centre of excellence for the high quality silversmiths, jewellers and manufacturers of 'Objets de Vertu' for which Paris was renowned. The firm of l'Escalier de Cristal was the first to manufacture crystal taille objects in gilt-bronze and they went on to supply clocks, vases, lamps and furniture to ruling families in Europe. Many of their designs followed in the tradition of the marchand merciers of the 18th century. This table with it's adjustable column rising to chest height was probably produced to display and examine luxury objects, clocks or small bronzes.A Louis XVI table of similar form stamped by Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas was offered at Sotheby's Paris, 9th November 2010, lot 183.
