Y A REGENCY MAHOGANY AND EBONY WRITING-TABLE EARLY 19TH CENTURY The rounded rectangular top with a reeded edge above two frieze drawers with leopard mask handles on standard end supports joined by a turned stretcher and with sabre legs and brass caps and castors, lacking leather writing surface 75cm high, 107cm wide, 60cm deepProvenance: Supplied to William, 3rd Viscount Courtenay, later 9th Earl of Devon (1768 - 1835) and thence by descent at Powderham Castle. Sold Sotheby's, London, 29 September 2009, lot 63The table is probably the one recorded in the 1880 inventory for Powderham Castle in the 1st Drawing Room, described as `inlaid writing desk or table' and later illustrated in Country Life, 4 April 1908,vol.
