A FRENCH EMPIRE ORMOLU FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK 'THE CHARIOT OF TELEMACHUS' LE ROY PALAIS ROYALE NO 114 A PARIS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, Case after the 1807 model by Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817), with pair of horses drawing chariot ridden by Telemachus, by Athena standing guard behind, rectangular plinth below with relief decoration on four fasces pillars, the chariot wheel forming the dial with enamel chapter ring signed 'LE ROY PALAIS ROYALE NO 114 A PARIS', the detachable rear chariot wheel enclosing an eight-day movement with silk suspension, later pendulum, striking on a bell 45cm high, base 49.5cm wide, 12cm deep This model is sometimes described as the Chariot of Diomedes, protected by Minerva. However the sketch by Reiche of the subject is titled 'Le Char de Télémaque', and was deposited with the Bibliothèque Impériale in 1807 (now the Bibliothèque Nationale, Ref.134-1807). The same model of clock is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, 'La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe Siècle', 1997, p.417, plate D and by Tardy, 'Les Plus Belles Pendules Françaises', 1994, p.279.
