A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY SOFA ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN TAYLOR, CIRCA 1830, Upholstered in blue and white striped cotton canvas with loose cushions and bolsters, the shaped ends carved with lion masks, foliage, reeding and rosettes, with boldly-beaded seat rails and lotus-wrapped lion paw feet 81cm high, 258cm wide, 95cm deepProvenance: West-East, The Niall Hobhouse Collection, Christie's, London, 22 May 2008, lot 49The sofa, conceived in the antique manner with lyre-scrolled ends and palm-wreathed griffin monopodia, corresponds almost exactly to a pattern by the Covent Garden cabinet-maker and upholsterer John Taylor who had trained at the New Bond Street firm of George Oakley. Taylor provided patterns to R. Ackermann's, Repository of Arts, in the early 1820s, and later included the pattern for this couch in his General Book of Reference for Chairs, Sofas, Couches, Easy Chairs etc., 1850.
