Collection of antique volumes of The Comic Almanack, originally issued as yearly illustrated annuals beginning in 1835 and continuing through 1853. A cornerstone of 19th-century British illustrated satire, the series features numerous wood engravings and caricatures by the renowned Victorian artists. The almanacs contain merry tales, humorous poetry, quips, and oddities, blending comic verse, social commentary, and sharp satirical observation characteristic of mid-Victorian popular culture. Richly illustrated throughout with detailed engravings reflecting distinctive styles and influence on period caricature and illustrated publishing. The run is missing the annuals for 1837 and 1843. Also included is an antique copy of Volume I of "In the Fire of the Forge: A Romance of Old Nuremberg" by Georg Ebers. Bad to fair antique condition. Volumes show significant wear consistent with age and handling. Please refer to the photos for more details. Size of the annuals varies, and the largest measures approximately 4-1/4" x 6-5/8" x 3/8". Provenance: From the estate and heirs of Robert Clarence Pruyn (1847–1934), American inventor, banker, businessman, and politician; son of Robert Hewson Pruyn, who was the Minister to Japan as appointed by Abraham Lincoln, and founder of Albany Law School; a member of one of Albany’s oldest and most prominent Dutch families in New York.
