A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY PATENT RECLINING ARMCHAIR BY ROBERT DAWS, CIRCA 1830 The back reclining on a ratchet in the arm support and with a concealed foot rest beneath the seat, on turned legs with brass caps and castors, stamped R.DAWS R O GR PATENT with a crown 99cm high, 74cm wide, 81cm deepRobert Daws (or Dawes), cabinet-maker and upholder of 17 Margaret Street, Cavendish Square, patented his 'Improved Recumbent Chair' in 1827, and the design was illustrated in J.C.Loudon, Encyclopaedia of Cottage Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833, fig. 1913. Two very similar chairs are illustrated in C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pg. 176-7, fig. 282 and 284.
