A REGENCY OAK AND EBONISED CENTRE TABLE DESIGNED BY WILLIAM ATKINSON ON 4 NOVEMBER 1811, POSSIBLY BY GEORGE BULLOCK The top with corner quatrefoils above arched frieze rails on square tapering legs 74cm high, 79cm wide, 51cm deepProvenance: Supplied to David, 3rd Earl of Mansfield (d.1840) and by descent at Scone Palace, Perthshire, until sold Christie's, London, 24 May 2007, lot 401. Anonymous sale, Christie's, London, 8 July 2009, lot 474William Atkinson's 1811 design for `Part of a table top' are held in the Scone Palace Family Archive. Atkinson's hand-written annotation directs the maker to `Finish the tables to this drawing without the ornament in the angles - Nov 4th 1811'. The instruction was likely intended for George Bullock who is believed to have supplied the table and other furnishings for Scone, and while he did `Finish' the tables with quatrefoils to the corners, additional gothic decoration featured in the design was omitted.William Atkinson (d.1839) was employed by David, 3rd Earl of Mansfield, as architect in the re-building of Scone Palace (1802 - 1812). Atkinson trained under James Wyatt in the 1790s and became perhaps the leading exponent of the gothic style, undertaking numerous country house commissions including Abbotsford, Roburghshire (1816 - 23) for Sir Walter Scott and Chequers, Buckinghamshire (1823). He was known to collaborate with the London Furniture-maker George Bullock and was likely the `Atkinson' noted as a buyer in the 1819 sale of Bullock's stock after his death.
