AFTER THE ANTIQUE- A LARGE NEAPOLITAN BRONZE TRIPOD ATHÉNIENNE PROBABLY BY CHIURAZZI & FILS, LATE 19TH CENTURY Bronze and mixed metals, with Chiurazzi Pompeii verdigris patination 93cm high, 60cm diameter Provenance:Acquired from Blanchard, London, September 1998. Literature; Klinkhardt & Biermann, Vergoldete Bronzen,Ottomeyer/Pröschel, plate 5.19.1. F Niccolini, The Houses and Monuments of Pompeii, vol II., pl.38, 1854-1896 The design of this tripod is taken from the Roman prototype in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Copies were popular in the 19th century and were produced for decorative as well as practical uses. One example was manufactured for the baptism of the King of Rome in 1811. Another, made entirely of ormolu and lapis lazuli, was presented by the people of Milan to the Empress Marie-Louise. Chiurazzi's model appears as number 72295 in the 1915 catalogue and is described as a Trépied pour les sacrifices, de style grec tres pur.
