CALCUTTA SCHOOL, 1881STUDY OF A GREAT BLACK-HEADED GULL; AND SHEET OF STUDIES OF A LARGEST TERN, A LITTLE TERN, A STILT AND A SMALL MARSH TERNpencil and watercolour, heightened with gum arabic on paperthe first with inscription Kroikocephalus ichthyaetus./Great black-headed Gull. J 979./ This fine gull is rare in India, only seen on the coast or mouths of large/rivers. I shot this bird in Oudh on a river about 900 miles from the sea.with details of habitat, the second with inscriptions Sylochlidon caspius. Largest Tern.J.982. Tarafgunge.22 Feby81. Found on most parts of India alone or in pairs, rarely a few together. Feeds on fish & prawns. Breeds in Central Asia and lays 2 eggs, pale livid with dusky spots/Sternula minuta. The Little Tern. Is most abundant at the mouths of tidal rivers, and inland it has been/only met with on the Ganges. breeds in India on sandbanks; the eggs are large for the size of the bird, ashy- green with small spots and blotches/Himantopos candidus.Stilt.J.898. Gondah/1 April 81. Found in numerous flocks in all India on edges of banks and rivers and feeds on molluscs, worms and insects. Breeds chiefly in northern regions but also in north Africa, laying 4 eggs in a tuft of grass./Hydrochelidon Indica. (Young) Small Marsh Tern.J.984./Wazingunge.25augt.81. very abundant in India. In some parts of the country it roosts on thick beds of reeds congregating in vast numbers. Breeds in India on sandbanks of large rivers47.5 x 59cm (18½ x 23in.); and 63.3 x 49.5cm.
