AN EGYPTIAN REVIVAL POLYCHROME PAINTED ARMCHAIR EARLY 20TH CENTURY, AFTER THE 18TH DYNASTY THRONE OF TUTANKHAMUN The back decorated with the seated King Akhenaten being anointed by his wife, the seat protected by carved lion heads 101cm high, 67cm wide, 70cm deep Provenance: Acquired from Anthony Outred, London, 23 July 1999. Archaeological excavations in Egypt in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries funded largely by French, British and German governments culminated in the sensational discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 and the unearthing of the golden throne of the child King/Deity who had died in 1323BC. These expeditions promoted Western interest in ancient Egypt and the fashion for all things `Egyptian' spread widely. Furniture makers responded producing a variety of items inspired more or less directly from artefacts uncovered by the excavations. One such maker, Guiseppe Parvis (d.1909), who was born in Lombardy and studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, settled in Cairo in 1859, establishing his business of making and selling furniture. He became known internationally, exhibiting at the Universal Expositions in Paris (1867), Philadelphia (1876), Milan (1881) and Turin (1884) where he exhibited his `Egyptian Bedroom'. A walnut and parcel-gilt armchair by Parvis was sold from a Spanish private collection Sotheby's, London 18 May 2021, lot 141 (£4410 including premium). 品相： Good, structurally secure, with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks, notably shrinkage in the back panel leading to a gap between panel and the left upright. Wear and chips to the paintwork throughout.
