A PAIR OF CARVED PINE AND OAK SWAGS19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF GRINLING GIBBONS Each with ribbon crest suspending a trail of flowers, fruit and vegetables, previously decorated, restorations 152cm high Provenance: The Overland Family, Mont Pellier, Jersey.Christie's, London, Glebe House, Mont Pellier and Woodbury House: Three Country House Collections, 17th June 2015, lot 206 In the 19th century carved decoration in the manner of Grinling Gibbons was made by artisans including William Gibbs Rogers (1792 - 1875). Apprenticed to a shipwright around 1807, by 1817 he had established a carving workshop in Soho and by 1846 he was listed as `carver and gilder and collector of ancient carvings' at 3 Great Newport Street. A pair of carved swags stamped `W. G. Rogers' is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, vol II, Leeds, 1978. A group of Gibbons-style carvings attributed to Rogers, removed from the 18th century Bretton Park, Yorkshire, was sold Christie's, London, 5 July 1990, lots 28 - 31. 品相： Good, structurally secure, with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. As noted they were previously decorated and have likely been dipped to remove layers of decoration resulting in the grain opening. Some old repairs. Surfaces are rather murky.
