A PAIR OF FRENCH EMPIRE AND GILTWOOD BERGERESCIRCA 1800, IN THE MANNER OF PIERRE-BENOIT MARCIONEach with a rectangular padded back, the bowed seat with a loose cushion, the lotus-carved and turned arms with rosette terminals and with tapering turned and lotus-carved supports, each stamped JME to front rail96cm high, 66cm wide, 86cm deepProvenance:Acquired from Mark Ransom Ltd, London, 27 October 1999The bergeres show marked similarities to the work of Pierre-Benoit Marcion (1769 - 1840), cabinet-maker to Emperor Napoleon and in this capacity second only in importance to Georges Jacob. A suite of seat furniture by Marcion was sold Sothebys, Paris, 25 June 2025, lot 57 (16,510 EUR including premium), a single armchair from the same suite was sold Christie's, London, 25 November 2014, lot 156 (£5000 including premium). 品相： Good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. here is wear to the gilding and some chips and scuffing, the red bole and white gesso is visible in places. The green moquette upholstery is slightly worn, notably on the armrests.Pegged construction.The JME stamps, which indicate that the maker and the object had been endorsed by the Parisian guild of furniture makers, are likely spurious since this mark was not used after 1791.
