拍品描述

Y An ivory colonial sculpture of a triumphant Saint Michael, trampling the Devil, probably the Philippines, 19thC, H 43,5 cm (+) Saint Michael depicted as a soldier, his sword raised high in accordance with the Southeast Asian belief that bladed weapons should never point downwards, for fear their power would cause earthquakes and other natural disasters. The sword has a short, double-edged blade, probably a later addition, as indicated by its colour and construction, and it is likely that he was originally holding a Kris or Balasiong. Saint Michael the Archangel is especially revered in the Philippines, which has many churches and chapels devoted to the saint.
