A very fine portrait of a nobleman, presumably Jacobus Goos (1590-1666), ca. 1650, graphite on parchment on panel A stunning quality portrait of a nobleman with a coat of arms with the motto 'Lucent et Ornant'. Based on the coat of arms, this appears to be a descendant of the wealthy Antwerp Goos family. The last member of this line was Anna Goos (1627-1691); she married Balthasar II Moretus and, as a result, became co-director of the Plantin printing house between 1674 and 1681. The portrait here could therefore depict her father, Jacobus Goos, a chaplain in Antwerp. The few official portraits of Balthasar II Moretus (1659), Anna Goos (1659), and their son, Balthasar III Moretus (1660), were painted by Jacob Van Reesbroeck (1620-1704). He is also believed to have served as an engraver at the printing house. Perhaps he created this drawing as a design for a portrait or an engraving.
