Adrien-Joseph Heymans (1839-1921), view of tavern 'De Keizer' in Wechelderzande, oil on canvas Signed to the lower right corner. 'Gasthof de Keizer' was an important meeting point for the plein-air painters at the end of the 19thC; in the Northern Campine. This tavern has a long history dating back to the 17th century and later as an artists' colony for impressionist painters such as Heymans, Van de Velde, Crabeels, Rosseels, Meyers... later known as the 'School of Wechelen'.
