With armorial bookplate of Robert Clarence Pruyn affixed to the inside front cover and a near-contemporary handwritten bibliographic note pasted inside the back cover identifying the work as the Institutions impériales de Justinien, describing it as a Roman law text with commentaries, and recording its printing at Lyon on 7 February 1517 by Estienne Gueynard. Printed in black letter in double columns with red rubricated headings and paragraph marks, within ornamental woodcut borders, and woodcut initials throughout. A foundational instructional text of Roman law composed under Emperor Justinian I, issued with extensive medieval and early Renaissance legal glosses and commentary apparatus consistent with its use as a scholarly legal textbook. Bound in an early blind-tooled pigskin binding over wooden boards. Early manuscript annotations present; ownership bookplate and original metal clasps retained. Very good antique condition with wear consistent with age and prolonged institutional use. Please refer to photos for details. Measures approximately 5-1/4" x 7" x 2-1/4". Provenance: Originally from the Premonstratensian Monastery of Roggenburg, Bavaria, as evidenced by the engraved armorial monastic bookplate reading MONASTERII ROGGENBURG ORDINIS PRAEMONSTRATENSIS. Later from the estate and heirs of Robert Clarence Pruyn (1847–1934), American inventor, banker, businessman, and politician; son of Robert Hewson Pruyn, who was the US Minister to Japan as appointed by Abraham Lincoln, and founder of Albany Law School; a member of one of Albany’s oldest and most prominent Dutch families in New York.
