Within it, an elegant scholar with a calm countenance is leisurely appreciating the bamboo as he walks past. The bamboo is tall and rigid, hinting at the gentleman's own noble, bright, and uptight character. This painting was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1988 and is sold alongside the auction catalog. 頤和園聽鸝館原爲慈禧小戲院，始建于乾隆年間，1860年被英法聯軍燒毀，1892年重建，成爲慈禧太後常來欣賞戲曲的地方。張大仟曾租借于聽鸝館，與蜇居在萬壽山介壽堂的溥心畬爲鄰，二人經常談詩論畫，切磋藝事，過往甚密。本幅作品作于1934年，張大仟著意突出竹的節支，似暗寓重節氣而疏朗爲人的胸臆。畫中竹幹直穿幅頂，竹竿挺直，筆力遒勁，極富彈性。高仕神態自然平和，極具古典文人雅士之閑逸，清逸瀟灑中略帶疏懶情致，與周圍蕭疏的竹景相互呼應。本作品出自1988年蘇富比拍賣，幷附圖錄。
