The leaves are like semi-cursive and cursive characters. Once the ink starts flowing, it can’t be stopped; So let them mock me, an old fool, for being so wild. Su Dongpo said that the character ‘ugly’ captures many forms of rocks. For painting lotuses, I substitute the character ‘excessive’ to convey their endless variety. His childhood name was Zhang Zhengquan; he later changed his name to Zhang Yuan, courtesy name Ji Yuan, and took the religious name Daqian. He also used the aliases Daqian Jushi (the Lay Buddhist Daqian) and Xialigang Ren; he also named his studio Da Feng Tang. He was a modern Chinese painter and a member of the Jingxing Society. Representative works include Lotus, Lake of Love’s Trace, Ten Thousand Li of the Yangtze River, and Autumn Dawn. Over decades of artistic practice, through relentless exploration and effort, Zhang Daqian’s “Daqian lotus” has achieved a special place in Chinese art history. In his painting, the lotuses are poised and graceful, elegant yet accessible, charming without being vulgar, and were composed without being superficial. After he developed his splashed-ink and color technique in his later years, his lotus paintings not only transcended mere botanical depiction, but also pushed the brush-and-ink scope of literati flower painting into a new territory. He didn’t just love painting lotuses, but also loved growing them. Living day and night among the lotus plants, with his sharp observation and highly distilled powers of description, he captured the flowers’ characteristics and fleeting moments over time, then refined and exaggerated them with his own aesthetic sensibility and artistic temperament, imbuing them with profound meaning and vibrant life. This work is a lotus from his later years, combining the splashed-ink method with traditional Chinese freehand brushwork. The lotus is enchanting, and the entire picture is suffused with a rich, misty atmosphere.
