About the artist: Hong Yi (Li Shutong) (October 23, 1880 – October 13, 1942) was a celebrated musician, art educator, calligrapher, and theater activist, and one of the pioneers of Chinese spoken drama. He was also known as Li Xishuang, Li An, Li Liang, his genealogical name Wentao, his childhood name Chengxi, his school name Guanghou, his courtesy name Xishuang, and an alternate name Shutong. Over the course of his life he used more than two hundred aliases, changing them as circumstances, times, and places demanded. About the verse: This couplet comes from the Buddhist scripture Sutra of Immeasurable Life, although the calligraphy inscription itself incorrectly identifies it as a verse from the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. The original text praises the steadfast resolve of a practitioner seeking the Way of the Buddha and the ultimate perfection of their attainment. “Courageous vigor and tireless diligence” refers to the bodhisattva’s practice of the six perfections and the myriad deeds; “radiant light and sublime features” points to the Buddha’s thirty two major marks and eighty secondary characteristics, or the glorious physical manifestation of awakening. The Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang, on his great pilgrimage to the west in search of scriptures, is said to have silently recited this very verse while crossing the Gobi Desert, leaning on its indomitable spirit to overcome the perils of nature. Within Buddhist teaching, “courageous vigor and tireless diligence” carries three layers of meaning. First, as the Mahaprajnaparamita Sastra explains, “Diligence is like a river, flowing day and night without ceasing.” In other words, practice requires constant effort, just like rowing against the current. Second, the teaching embodies the “four right exertions” described in the Yogacarabhumi Sastra: putting an end to evil that has already arisen, preventing evil that has not yet arisen, bringing forth good that has not yet arisen, and increasing good that has already arisen. And third, the teaching echoes the Avatamsaka Sutra’s teaching of “thought moment linking to thought moment, without a single gap,” which refers to the uninterrupted continuity of genuine practice. The Ming dynasty master Hanshan Deqing once instructed his disciples with this verse, saying: “Courage does not mean the reckless bravery of an ordinary man. Rather, courage is the perseverance that comes after wise discernment. Diligence is not blind asceticism; it is sustained effort born from a clear understanding of cause and effect.” Infused with Chan (Zen) spirit, the couplet’s first line stresses the importance of practice, reminding the practitioner to always maintain wholesome thoughts and cultivate virtuous teachings in order to reach a higher spiritual plane. The second line underscores the practitioner’s responsibility: to deliver all living beings through the supreme path.
