To inspire my poetry, I also need round tea cakes. I add a fresh flame to the bamboo stove; The stone kettle boils with a startling rush. Fish eye and crab eye bubbles slowly rise, Banner and spear leaf tips unfurl in the shadows. One cup of this pure delight is enough; The spring vessel wards off the lingering chill. After the poem comes the date: “imperially composed in the middle ten days of the tenth lunar month of the dingsi year of the Jiaqing reign” (1797), which is followed by the square seals “Jia” and “Qing.” The base is inscribed with a six character underglaze blue seal mark reading “Da Qing Jiaqing Nian Zhi” (Made in the Jiaqing reign of the Great Qing). The dating indicates that the poem was written in 1797, the second year of the Jiaqing era. At that time, the powerful minister Heshen dominated the court, the bureaucracy was increasingly corrupt, and social tensions were escalating. The Jiaqing Emperor was keenly aware of these problems but felt powerless to address them; the Qing Empire, though still at its zenith, had already begun to show early signs of decline. This Jiaqing marked blue and white imperial poem crabapple tea tray uses the poem itself as decoration, deliberately rejecting the concrete imagery of traditional porcelain design in favor of lyrical beauty and literary refinement. It elevates the object beyond mere functionality and craftsmanship, transforming it into a vessel that embodies the emperor’s literary thoughts and the refined taste of the scholar. The addition of an imperial poem makes this scholar’s object not only a piece of royal luxury, but also an article of elegant bookishness. This creates the perfect fusion of imperial and literati aesthetics. This truly is a rare and exquisite imperial scholarly object.
