Pair of German Inlaid Wood Religious Panels 18th-19th century, German A pair of German carved inlaid wood religious panels. Each panel features a Catholic religious scene. One panel features monks or priests at prayer at bottom, with heavenly light adorning the upper left corner and the Mother and Child at the right side. Another panel features inlaid depictions of angels praying fervently at the bottom section, with a central depiction of celestial radiance, with sunburst rays, clouds, and the faces of angelic figures. Panels have frames that read respectively across bottom "Marie Freifrau von Venningen Gebohrne Specht Von Blibenheim" and "Geschenkt Der Katholischen Kirche Zu Eichtersheim Anno 1830". A torn label on verso reads legibly "A. Hornung- Specht Waldstrausse 35... /Baden Amerik Zone Germany ... New York... Stapleton USA", also on back is an illegible signature. Cataloguer's Note: Marie Freifrau von Venningen may refer to Maria Anna Freifrau von Venningen (née Freiin von Hutten zu Stolzenberg) was a 18th-century German noblewoman, primarily recognized as the subject of a 1753 portrait painted by Johann Georg Ziesenis. This noblewoman is also believed to be more formally known as Claudia Elisabeth Maria von Venningen, Countess of Reichenstein, she is the stepmother of Maria Sophia von Erthal, a woman frequently cited by historians as the likely real-life inspiration for Snow White.
