Rare Impressive Indian Hardwood Chennakeshava Temple Style Pillar 19th century, Indian One of a kind Indian hardwood pillar column carved in three sections. The top section with seven circular panels with relief carved, highly detailed deities with both raised, carved, and plain circular bands coming down to the main column. The center tall column with seven rows of eight deities to each row. Each is framed to look like deities in a temple. The center section stops and then becomes square with what appears to be stuppah shaped temples, one on each side, with deities inside. The next step down with deities carved to the corners and large panels to all four sides. The next panel with twin lions to all four corners and larger finely carved high relief deities. Next step down is a round top base with even larger carved anthropomorphic lion-esque heads. Cataloguer's Notes: Incredible detail to face, hands, and robes of each figures must be seen to be appreciated fully. Mark first saw this piece in a private home in Los Angeles many years ago, and the owner did not want to sell at the time. After many years, Mark finally acquired this masterpiece of Indian wood carving. We could not find any other carved wood examples to compare this to, therefore we used the shape of the soapstone one in the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur.
