Large Indian Sacred Nandi Bull Vahana Polychrome Wood Sculpture Late 19th-early 20th century, Indian The bull is standing on all four legs with the head slightly turned. Hoofs are painted black. The sculpture features a nice patina and is adorned with two necklaces of bells, pierced nose, raised saddle around the hips are more raised bells and floral sprays. All four legs above the hoof feature bangle bracelets. Now mounted on an original wheeled platform to be carried during a procession or a parade. This large sculpture depicts Nandi, the bull and sacred mount (vahana) of the god Shiva. Much like the deity he serves, Nandi embodies happiness, joy, and virility.
