Large Carved Wood Indian Sculpture of Hindu Shakti Goddess Kali Durga 19th-20th century, Indian This is a finely carved wood example of a Hindu sculpture with traces of polychrome yellow, blue, and red in the crevices of the piece. It depicts the Hindu Mother Goddess Durga, having ten arms with weapons in each hand, showing her strength as a warrior and her ability to protect devotees from evil from all directions. Her weaponry and symbolic motifs in each hand is representative of Durga in her Kali form, Kali and Durga are the same divine essence but represent different "moods" or manifestations of the supreme feminine power, Shakti. Highly detailed, featuring elaborate costuming including each wrist having bracelets, headdress, earrings, and palms with henna designs. The costuming includes her wearing tiger-skin leggings. She is standing on a male figure, the man beneath her feet is her husband, Lord Shiva. In Hindu iconography, Kali is often shown dancing in a destructive fury after defeating demons. To prevent her from destroying the entire universe, Shiva lays himself down in her path. The base features traces of yellow pigment with a double lotus pattern. This is a very intriguing sculpture of divine feminine power.
