Pair of Antique Life Size Burmese Nat Statues Late 19th-early 20th century, Burmese Antique Burmese Nat statues show the rich cultural heritage of Myanmar and are carved from wood and adorned with gold leaf. The fine patterns on the clothing and unique designs of the female's headdress reflect spiritual beliefs prevalent during it's creation. (1) The female figure with sacred bull headdress, the eyes on the bull and the figure are both inlaid with shell. The black lacquer with traces of gilt to offering hands and her outfit with raised relief design including a necklace, shoulder fittings, skirt. She is barefoot mounted on a red lacquer stand with white Burmese characters. The reverse side with finely executed long hair passed the waist with additional bands adorning her dress. This figure is carved from one solid log with extended wood from elbow to hand. Also extended wood for bull headdress. Hands are raised upwards with an offering position, with carved gilt fish. (1) The matching male figure with inlaid eyes, gold leaf face, and elaborate raised decoration throughout costume and traditional shoes with matching red lacquer base featuring white painted Burmese script. Larger than life, carved from one large log. Extremely heavy. Arms are carved (elbow to hand) from a different log. The hair is raised and tied in a traditional knot atop the head. Braided cord detail wraps around wrist with sword. Traces of gold leaf and black lacquer. Holding the traditional Burmese sword. Mark says: This is the largest pair of Burmese Nat figures he has ever seen. He had these in the mansion at 106 Arch St., Sunbury PA
