Large Pair of Japanese Carved Wood Shishi Lions Late Edo-Meiji period, Japanese Large pair of Japanese carved wood Shishi lions with reverse painted glass eyes. This is a large and impressive pair dating to the late Edo to Meiji period. One lion with raised paw atop a pierced wooden ball. The other lion with a small Shishi carved underneath paw, the smaller Shishi also has inlaid glass eyes. The surface is carved with long curling mane, eyebrows, and tail. The tails are carved from a separate piece and peg into the back of the dogs. The dogs bodies have raised bumps with carved swirls, typical of Buddhist lion design. Cataloguer's Note: Mark says: "These are quite heavy and most likely carved from hardwood. You usually see these types of dogs mounted at front or on Japanese temples."
