Unusual Shaped Large Japanese Imari Vase w/ Flying Phoenixes & Underglaze Blue Waves 19th century (Meiji), Japanese Unusual shaped large Japanese Meiji Imari vase with flying phoenixes and underglaze blue waves as well as underglazed blue framing panels, both at base, mouth rim and center sections. The brocade patterns are finely detailed and gilded with copper red, green, and black with fan shaped medallions with pine trees, cherry blossoms, cranes flying. The side panels feature Kylin panels, quail panels, Chidori birds in brocade patterns. The top inside mouth rim with flowering scroll work design. Beautifully painted Imari palette vase. Cataloguer's Note: This Imari is in marks opinion, considered in the top 10% of quality for imari.
