17th Cent. Chinese Gilt Zitan Wood Seated Shadashri Buddha 17th century, Chinese A Chinese carved buddha composed of a Zitan wood foundation, depicting Shadashri seated atop a tiered base, completed with a gilt finish. Carved from one large piece of Zitan. This finely carved detailed seated Buddha with scrolling cloud design to robe, jeweled carved armbands and bracelets, exquisite fine detail to hair, eyes. The robe is carved to appear as if it is flowing off the body with detailed hand positions. The front two hands clasped in prayer, and the side hands in a gesture and lotus flower. Openwork ribbons flow from shoulders down to the arms and continue to flow to feet. The back showing the bottom of a tiger skin draped over the shoulder. The overall patina is very good with wear to gilt on high points of face, arms, knees, ect. For other examples of this style of Buddha, mostly cast in bronze, please see Christies or Sothebys.
