Rare Japanese Edo Period Armor Edo period (18th-19th century), Japanese The helmet or Kabuto with 62 plates and large aventail (shikoro). The shikoro features two affixed brass mons, or family emblems for the Kikkawa clan. The cuirass (do), the armor is also highlighted with printed do skin and has a red leather interior with brass trimming and is overlaid with wood or composition and braided cord detail and a suspending cord. The do is finished at the bottom with red circular braided cord accents, and features at shoulder straps matching Kikkawa clan emblems. The back of the do has two fittings to hold batallion flag or family crest/mons. The armored sleeves (kote) are blue silk with chainmail and composition or wood paneling finished with brass gold tone butterfly hardware, tying with navy blue silk straps. The armored sleeves end at fingertips with silk gauntlets, featuring loops to secure around middle finger and thumb. The tasset panels (kusazuri) are on a matching blue silk backing with wood or composition paneling and ties with navy blue silk cord. The greaves (suneate) are lined in blue silk, with wood or composition paneling and reddish-brown leather accents at ankle and tie with silk ribbon. The samurai mask, or menpo, features an iron composition a black lacquered faceplate with red lacquered interior, boar's hair nose plate, red and gold lacquered ueba, and a braided cord and wood panel throat guard. Cataloguer's Note: Mark has owned this armor for over 25 years. It is a complete suit with all matching parts.
