Egyptian Antique Bronze and Wood Ibis on Stand Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, Egyptian Ancient Egypt, a time from about 1070-332 CE, known as the Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period. This is a wonderfully preserved sacred ibis, a type of bird, of the style found in the tombs of the scribes. The bird is connected with the deity Djehuty, or Thoth, who was the god of knowledge in the Egyptian pantheon, a group of gods. Here, the bird is shown seated with a curving neck and long bill. The body is carved from wood and covered in gesso, a plaster-like material that would have been white but has gained a rich patina. The leg, head, and tail feathers are made separately from bronze, with drawn details. The eyes likely once had something shiny placed in them. Take note of webbed feet and intricate markings on tail feathers. It is mounted on a wooden platform that is also covered in gesso and may have once had painted decorations. Accompanied by an XRF elemental analysis report confirming materials consistent with antiquity. Similar sold by Artemis Fine Arts: "Fine Antiquities | Asian | Ethnographic Art" Lot 3A April 8th 2021.
