A Pennsylvania native by way of Chester County, he was a surveyor, lawyer, militia officer, and early state legislator — roles that positioned him at the heart of the new nation's founding years. In 1773, Maclay established a stone house in Sunbury at the corner of Front and Arch Streets—on land integral to the nascent town's layout. During its early years, portions of the home and its grounds were fortified: a stockade was added at the rear, and the building's cellar was later connected to the nearby river by an underground passage. These features supported the home's role, at times, as a storage depot for arms and supplies during the Revolutionary era. * Disclaimer this house is not for sale.
