拍品描述
An original antique Japanese triptych woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900). This piece is titled Kanjincho, or The Subscription List. The play is based on the Noh play Ataka, and is one of the most popular plays in the modern Kabuki repertory. The scene likely depicts the encounter at the Ataka barrier in Kaga Province?where Minamoto no Yoshitsune, fleeing from his brother Minamoto no Yoritomo, and his loyal retainer Benkei are disguised as yamabushi (Buddhist mountain priests). They are confronted by Togashi Saemon no j_, the barrier guard. To deceive Togashi and allow Yoshitsune and his men to pass, Benkei pretends they are collecting funds for temple restoration and reads from a blank scroll, acting as the "kanjinch_". Each piece is double matted and framed under glass and each measures 18.5 inches x 21.5 inches. This piece is believed to have been printed in in the late 1800s, and it was acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate., Each is 18.5IN x 21.5IN (47cm x 55cm), LOT REF #25-588
