An original Jishan Laoren (Mid 1800s) Japanese Zen ink scroll painting depicting a?seated or reclining figure in loose robes, with an expressive face, turned slightly upward, and a bold brushstroke outlining his posture. This iconography, a semi-humorous, contemplative sage with an oversized head, relaxed pose, and empty background, is characteristic of?Zen figure paintings that typically depict either Hotei, the ?Laughing Monk,? a Zen symbol of contentment and enlightenment through simplicity, or Daruma (Bodhidharma)?in a lighter mood.
