拍品描述

A finely executed Chinese imperial ancestor portrait depicting a?Ming dynasty emperor, seated frontally in full ceremonial court attire. The composition follows the strict conventions reserved exclusively for imperial portraiture, presenting the ruler in a formal, symmetrical pose intended to convey authority, legitimacy, and moral virtue. The emperor is shown wearing an elaborate?dragon robe (longpao)?richly decorated with five-clawed dragons, auspicious emblems, and gold-toned textile patterns, signifying supreme imperial rank. He is seated upon a raised throne platform with architectural railings, while the lower register is animated with intricate?dragon, cloud, and wave motifs, symbolic of heavenly mandate, dynastic power, and cosmic order. Rendered in?ink and mineral pigments on silk, the portrait demonstrates careful facial modeling, controlled brushwork, and dense ornamental detail throughout the garments and throne. The depth and precision of the decorative elements distinguish this work from later decorative or export examples and reflect traditional court-style painting practices. Although titled??Ming Emperor,??this work is not a painting from the Ming dynasty itself, but a?later reverential portrait?produced during the late Qing dynasty or early Republic period, when portraits of earlier rulers were commonly commissioned for ancestral veneration, scholarly appreciation, or household altar display. The scroll is mounted in a traditional silk brocade format and is accompanied by its?original fitted storage box, bearing inscriptions identifying the subject along with later Western dealer annotations?an important feature supporting authenticity, age, and long-term preservation. Based on stylistic execution, pigments, mounting style, and condition, the work is best dated to the?late Qing dynasty to early Republic period (circa 1880?1920). While not a palace workshop original, it represents a high-quality ceremonial portrait produced for elite or commemorative use in keeping with imperial conventions. Acquired from a Metro-Washington DC estate. It measures 31 inches x 74 inches.
