A finely executed matching pair of Chinese ancestor portrait hanging scrolls, depicting a seated Qing dynasty court official and a richly dressed female consort. The male figure is shown wearing a red official hat, blue court robe, and court bead necklace, seated formally upon a decorated chair. The female figure wears an elaborate phoenix crown and embroidered dragon robe. This type of attire is associated with high-ranking women in official households. Both figures are presented frontally in the traditional style of Chinese ancestor portraits, intended for display during ancestral ceremonies and family rites. The backgrounds feature elegant bird-and-flower panels, symbolizing prosperity, longevity, and harmony. The scrolls retain their traditional silk brocade mounts and wooden rollers. The pair is housed in a decorative fitted storage box bearing the inscription, “Portraits by a Qing artist.” and “Seated portraits of a man and woman.” These works likely date to the late Qing dynasty or early Republican period, when such portraits were commonly commissioned by elite families to commemorate ancestors.
