Attractive Japanese ukiyo-e bijin-ga woodblock print after the renowned Kyoto master Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671?1750), titled Elegant Beauty Dancing with Fan. Sukenobu was one of the most influential early artists in the development of Japanese prints depicting idealized female beauty. The composition portrays a graceful young woman in flowing robes performing a dance while holding an open folding fan decorated with floral and butterfly motifs. The elegant turning pose, refined facial features, and richly patterned kimono embody the aesthetic ideals of Edo-period bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). The design captures the quiet sophistication associated with Kyoto culture and the early ukiyo-e tradition. Sukenobu was among the most important artists working in Kyoto during the early Edo period and helped establish the visual conventions of female portraiture that later influenced masters such as Suzuki Harunobu and Kitagawa Utamaro. His prints often depicted elegantly dressed women engaged in dance, poetry, or everyday courtly activities. The vertical inscription reads Nishikawa Sukenobu hitsu meaning ?Drawn by Nishikawa Sukenobu.? A red seal mark appears below the signature. This example appears to be a later Japanese impression after the Edo-period design, printed on thin paper in the traditional vertical _ban format. This appears to be a later Japanese reproduction impression after an Edo-period Harunobu design, likely produced mid-20th century (c. 1930?1950). This piece was examined outside of the frame and the piece the sheet shows light age toning and minor handling consistent with age. This piece is double matted and framed under acrylic in a wooden frame. With frame, this measures 13 inches x 17 inches.
