Issued in uniform binding by Scribner’s in 1901, this series was intended to introduce American readers to important works of French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Eastern European literature. The French volumes, as shown, include stories by such notable authors as Honoré de Balzac, Pierre Loti, Théophile Gautier, Édouard Rod, and Alfred de Vigny. Other volumes similarly present representative works from their respective national traditions. The series reflects the strong American interest in European realism, romanticism, and cosmopolitan literary culture at the dawn of the 20th century. Uniformly bound, the set presents attractively on the shelf and is well suited for traditional library décor or collectors of early 20th-century literary anthologies.
