1979. A three-volume facsimile reprint of the celebrated first edition of the?Encyclopaedia Britannica, originally published in Edinburgh between 1768 and 1771. The original edition, compiled by a ?Society of Gentlemen in Scotland? and printed by A. Bell and C. Macfarquhar, marked the beginning of what would become the world?s most influential encyclopedic reference work. This reproduction faithfully replicates the original typography, layout, and copperplate illustrations of the 18th-century edition. The title pages reproduce the original Edinburgh imprint and Roman numeral date (M.DCC.LXXI), consistent with facsimile editions. Bound in full brown leather with decorative spine panels and contrasting red and black labels, the set presents attractively and is well suited for display in a study, library, or traditional interior. Bindings structurally sound with light surface wear and minor rubbing consistent with handling. Interiors clean with light toning. No major structural issues observed. Overall?Very Good condition for a modern facsimile edition. Acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate.
