Period Song Dynasty (960-1279) Description The round disc-shaped plaque with black painted slip sgraffito decoration depicting Xia Jie. Xia Jie, the last ruler of the Xia dynasty in Chinese tradition, is depicted as a symbol of tyranny and moral corruption. Armed with a ji (halberd), an emblem of oppression, and seated upon two court ladies, representing the abuse of power, he embodies the destructive consequences of immoral rule and the loss of the Mandate of Heaven. Dimensions D 18 cm (incl. frame) Condition Report Some firing errors and kiln grit around the edge. No defects such as hairlines or chips and no restoration. Not examined outside the frame.
