Period Tibet, 19th century Description Finely painted in rich mineral pigments, the central figure of Śākyamuni Buddha seated in dhyāna upon a pink lotus throne, his right hand resting in bhūmisparśa mudrā while his left hand delicately holds a dharmacakra, symbolising the ‘Turning of the Wheel of Dharma’ and identifying him in his aspect as Chos kyi rgyal po, the ‘King of Dharma’. He is shown clad in elaborately patterned monastic robes with gold highlights, framed by a radiant nimbus of blue and red. The composition is densely arranged with narrative vignettes illustrating key episodes from the Buddha’s biography, including his birth at Lumbinī, ascetic practices prior to enlightenment, the assault of Māra, the teaching at Sarnath, and encounters with royal patrons, arhats, and celestial beings. Above and below are depictions of previous Buddhas and attendant figures, forming a continuous narrative cycle without linear perspective in the characteristic Tibetan manner. The landscape is animated with multi-layered cloud banks, terraced architecture, pavilions, gardens, and mountainous settings, executed in a style associated with the painting traditions of Ü-Tsang and Amdo during the late 18th to mid-19th century. The reverse bears a Tibetan uchen dedicatory inscription, typical of monastic commissions, requesting merit for the donor.
