A Thangka Depicting Bhāiṣajyaguru and the Assembly of One Thousand Buddhas

Period Tibet, late 19th to early 20th century Description Executed in mineral pigments and gold on cotton, centred by Bhāiṣajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha) in sambhogakāya form, richly adorned with a five-leaf crown and celestial robes, seated in dhyāna upon a lotus pedestal within a mandorla. He holds a pūrṇaghāṭa (vessel of abundance) in his hands, an attribute associated with healing, longevity and prosperity. Surrounding him are concentric registers of diminutive seated Buddhas arranged symmetrically against a vibrant red ground enriched with stylised cloud and floral motifs, forming the canonical “Thousand Buddhas” (Sahasra-buddha) assembly symbolising the manifold manifestations of awakened beings across the kalpas.
